TSBDE to Implement New SID Requirement for 2026 License Renewals
TSBDE Update: New Fingerprint Background Check Required for Some Licensees
Heads up, Texas dental professionals! The Texas State Board of Dental Examiners (TSBDE) is implementing a new requirement for license renewal, and we want to make sure you have the facts.
Following a Department of Public Safety (DPS) audit, the TSBDE identified that many dentists and dental hygienists do not have a State Identification Number (SID) on file. This is most common for those licensed before 2016.
This SID is necessary for the TSBDE to receive notifications of criminal history events. To ensure all files are complete and compliant, a new process is being introduced.
What is the New Requirement?
Beginning January 1, 2026, impacted licensees (those without a SID) will be required to submit fingerprints for a criminal history check to be assigned a SID. This will be a required part of the license renewal process for those affected.
What You Need to Do (And When)
Here is the most important part: You do not need to do anything right now.
The TSBDE has a clear plan for notifying those who are impacted.
DO NOT Call: The TSBDE specifically requests that licensees avoid contacting TSBDE staff to confirm if their information is in the database.
WAIT for Notification: If you are impacted, the TSBDE will notify you directly.
Check Your Portal: This notification will be sent via the online licensing system 90 days before your license expires.
Get Your QR Code: The official notification will include a unique QR code that you will need to begin the fingerprinting process. You must wait for this code.
Key Dates at a Glance
November 2025: The TSBDE will have a comprehensive Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section available on its website.
January 1, 2026: The new requirement officially begins for license renewals.
90 Days Before Your Expiration: This is the window when impacted licensees will receive their notification and unique QR code.
