Course Description: This seminar is designed to raise awareness of the current nationwide and drug trends in Texas and provide Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and state regulation. Topics will include the current state of opioid prescribing in United States and Texas; guidelines for prescribing opioids; and an overview of DEA requirements regarding the handling of controlled substances pursuant to Federal and Texas regulations.
Course Objectives:
(1) Discuss and gain additional insight of the nationwide problem involving opioid prescriptions.
(2) Discuss an outlook on prescription opioids in Texas.
(3) Discuss the regulatory responsibilities required by the state of Texas.
(4) Discuss the regulatory responsibilities required by the Drug Enforcement Administration.

TSBDE Controlled Substances Continuing Education Requirements for Dentists: This DEA course combines all dentists' controlled substance CE requirements into a single 4-hour course. The Texas State Board Dental Examiners will count the 2 hours of CE required for DEA permit holders (RULE §111.1 (b)) towards the 4 hours of CE required for all dentists providing direct patient care (RULE §104.1 (2)(B)). Upon completing this 4-hour course, dentists will meet required hours for both RULE §111.1 (b) and RULE §104.1 (2)(B).
