ADA: Dentistry is Safe, Essential, and Should Continue

Nov 18, 2020

The American Dental Association (ADA) wants dental care to remain open and accessible. “The American Dental Association (ADA) firmly believes dental care can continue to be delivered safely,” ADA told the nation in a statement from ADA President Daniel Klemmedson, DDS, MD. “Dental care is essential health care. Regular dental visits are important because treatment, as well as prevention of dental disease, helps keep people healthy,” the statement says.

The ADA cites the guidance issued by ADA and CDC that safeguards patients; the fact that no cases of COVID have been traced to a clinical dental setting; and the JADA study showing that the COVID-19 infection rate among dentists is less than 1%. To read the ADA’s full statement, please click HERE.

TDA wholeheartedly agrees with this statement. It is not only safe to go to the dentist—it is better than safe. It is essential for patients’ overall health, and for preventing illness. And dentists are experts in infection control. In July, TDA released a video showing patients the enhanced protocols that Texas dentists are using to protect patients. Click HERE to see the video on Facebook and share to your own social media accounts. You can also watch it HERE on YouTube.

Your membership in TDA, ADA, and your local society allows organized dentistry to advocate for dentists and patients at the state and national level.

Essential messaging to build patient confidence
Safe access to dentists is key to protecting Texans’ health

We know that Texas dentists are eager to get back to the important work of keeping your patients healthy. We also know that most dental practices in our state are small businesses and that the COVID-19 shutdown has been very difficult financially. As you get ready for the full opening of your clinics, it will be important to send a signal of hyper focus on patient and staff safety. This will build on the longstanding trust dentists enjoy.

Now is an excellent time to educate the public on the role of dentistry in whole-body health and preventing illness. Because of this, TDA has prepared the below messages for you to use in your staff and patient communications as well as any mailings, social media or advertising you may choose to do. Used consistently, we can raise public awareness and confidence in safely reopening dental practices.
