Title: The Science of Dental Fear: Why Patients Avoid Dentistry and What Can We Do About It

Thursday, 8:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m.-4:30 p.m. *Course Code T01* CE- 6 Hours

Research indicates that an overwhelming percentage of patients find dental care to be an anxiety-producing experience. At the same time, dentists and dental teams are frustrated when techniques that comfort one patient backfire on another. Despite being a problem for both patients and the dental team the profession has paid little attention to this issue. The participant will be able to: recognize the four major types of dental fear; understand the three most important pieces of information to be learned from the patient; identify an effective (and time-efficient) method to assess our patient’s needs;  identify the five techniques available to address dental fear; recognize how dental fear influences the patient’s treatment plan.

Intended Audience: Dentists, Hygienists, Dental Assistants, Office Personnel, Lab Technicians
