In Memoriam – Dr. David H. McCarley

It is with great sadness that we notify you of the passing of Texas Dental Association’s president, Dr. David H. McCarley. He will be greatly missed by TDA and ADA leadership, fellow dentists, and staff.

The TDA Board expresses its deepest sympathies to the McCarley family.  His loss will prove immeasurable with the passage of time.  A great husband, father, leader, and dentist of uncompromised ethics, Dr. McCarley embodied all that we should aspire to be in our daily walk. 

David H. McCarley, DDS, FAGD, 1953-2015

Dr. David McCarley received his DDS degree from Baylor College of Dentistry in 1981, after obtaining his Bachelors of Science in Microbiology at Texas Tech University. Before entering dental school, Dr. McCarley served as a graduate teaching assistant in Microbiology at Texas Tech from 1975-1977, and also served as a Laboratory Coordinator for the University of Arizona. Dr. McCarley will be remembered for his decades of service to dentistry and to his community. 

From the early days of his career, Dr. McCarley exemplified leadership in organized dentistry. A TDA member since 1981, Dr. McCarley was a Founding Member of the TDA Young Dentist Committee in 1988, and served on that committee until 1992, when he became the youngest person ever elected to the TDA Board of Directors. Dr. McCarley served as a TDA Alternate Delegate to ADA from 1994-97, DENPAC Representative from the Fourth District from 1995-2009, Delegate/Alternate to TDA from Fourth District from 1988-2012, and TDA Alternate Delegate to ADA from 2009-2013. Dr. McCarley was a member of the Council on Constitution and Bylaws from 2006-2014, and was Chairman from 2008-2014. He served as TDA Parliamentarian from 2011-2013, TDA President-Elect from 2013-2014, and in 2014, Dr. McCarley became TDA President, a position he held until his death.  

Dr. McCarley served in many positions at the national and local component society level.  He was President for the Fourth District Dental Society from 1985-1990.  He was a member of the ADA Council on Ethics, Bylaws, and Judicial Affairs from 2008-2012, a member of the ADA House Standing Committee on Credentials, Rules and Order in 2012, a member of the ADA Standing Committee on Council on Constitution and Bylaws from 2008-2011 and served as an ADA Connect Advisor from 2010-2012. 

Dr. McCarley was published in both the Journal of the American Dental Association, the Texas Dental Journal and the TDA Today.  His awards and accomplishments were many and included the following:

1989 – Fellow, Academy of General Dentistry

1992 - Fourth District Dental Society Young Dentist of the Year

1993 - TDA Young Dentist of the Year

1993, 1998, 2012 - Fourth District Dental Society Dentist of the Year

2009 - North Texas Dental Society Distinguished Dentist 

Dr. McCarley’s leadership extended beyond TDA, and into his community. He was active in the Kiwanis Club from 1981-1996, and was the President in 1989. He was involved in Ducks Unlimited, helping to preserve wetland habitats, from 1981-1995. In 1995, Dr. McCarley was a member of the Founding and Development Committee for the new Hygiene Program at Collin County Community College. Dr. McCarley sat on the Advisory Board of the Collin County Community College Hygiene School from 1995 until his death. Dr. McCarley was an Assistant Scoutmaster with the Boy Scouts of America from 1992-1999, and served on the Give Kids a Smile Committee from 2002-2005.   He also volunteered at numerous Texas Mission of Mercy events. 

Dr. McCarley enjoyed spending time with his wife, Lee Ann, and their 5 children and 4 grandchildren.  His passions were many, and ranged from traveling, to working with horses on the family ranch.  

David, friend and colleague, you will be missed though never forgotten.
